AWS announces transatlantic text messaging

ATLANTA-AT&T Wireless Services Inc. announced it has enabled transatlantic text messaging. The carrier said it now has reciprocal text messaging services with nearly 130 foreign operators in more than 50 countries, allowing those subscribers to exchange text messages with AWS customers in the United States.

AWS expanded its capabilities partly based on results of a survey conducted by KRC research in the U.K. that found more than 66 percent of text messaging users were unaware that most U.S. subscribers have been unable to receive international text messages. The survey also found 60 percent of mobile users would be more likely to send text messages to people in the U.S. if they were confident the messages would be received.
