Intel announces plans for environmentally friendly chips

TOKYO-Intel Corp. said it plans to make its processors and chipsets environmentally friendly by eliminating about 95 percent of the lead used in them.

The company said it will start shipping the lead-free products in the third quarter of 2004.

“Intel is working with the industry to find a reliable solution for the tiny amount of lead still needed inside the processor packaging to connect the actual silicon core to the package,” said Intel.
