Samsung ups phone sales expectations

SEOUL, South Korea-Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. upped its mobile-phone sales expectations for this year, according to a report from Reuters.

The company said it is seeing strong phone demand from the United States, Europe and Asia. According to Reuters, the company will sell more than 19.5 million phones in the first quarter, up from a previous estimate of 17 million.

The news comes as market leader Nokia Corp. said it will sell fewer mobile phones in the quarter than previously expected. However, Nokia will likely retain the clear lead as industry analysts expect the company now to sell 45 million phones in the first quarter.
