WOBURN, Mass.-Verizon Wireless, as the official telecommunications sponsor of the Boston Marathon, has launched the Athlete Alert Program, allowing Verizon customers to track marathon runners on race day.
The program allows spectators, friends and family to register to receive automatic updates on their wireless phones on a runner’s progress along the route. In addition, Verizon will work with the Boston Athletic Association and HP in remotely tracking runners. Race participants wear computer chips on their shoes or wheelchairs that wirelessly transmit their locations and times throughout the race, in real time.
