News from RF Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp. and Skyworks Solutions Inc. reflects the flurry of activities in the semiconductor world.
RFMD announced what it described as a strategic focus on three core business units, including cellular, wireless connectivity and infrastructure. All three division chiefs will report to Chief Executive Officer Bob Bruggeworth. The company expects to address a total market of $6 billion in three years, adding it will drive company revenue to more than $1 billion within that period.
“As we begin our fiscal 2005, our realignment around these three core business units demonstrates our commitment to growth in each of our markets and more closely aligns our product development and marketing efforts with our customers and their end markets,” said Bruggeworth.
Intel, Adobe and Boeing Corp. are some of the companies that formed the 3D Industry Forum to develop common standards for third-dimensional content to be used online and in business as digital audio, video and photos. This covers both wireless and wireline.
“This collaboration between different industries marks a significant step toward turning 3D graphics into the next ubiquitous media, the same way the JPG file format brought pictures to our PCs, the Internet and even cell phones,” said Pat Gelsinger, Intel senior vice president and chief technology officer.
The forum said it aims at creating a common standard for sharing interactive 3D content, providing tools and information for the use of these technologies and establishing a community for ongoing industry initiatives and development of the 3D graphics market.
The first version of the universal 3D open format will be released later this year, according to the forum.
Skyworks said its GSM/GPRS cellular system solution has provided key enabling technology for the Digiwalker 8390 smart phone of Mio technology Corp.
The phone also provides personal information management capabilities.
