Verizon Wireless bets on multiplayer poker game

RALEIGH, N.C.-Wireless application company Summus Inc. launched its new “Phil Hellmuth’s Texas Hold ‘Em” multiplayer poker game, which is available on Verizon Wireless’ application download service for $3 per month.

The game, featuring the likeness of World Poker Champion Phil Hellmuth, allows players to deal cards with a virtual Hellmuth or against other wireless users.

“I am extremely excited to work with Summus to promote their wireless, multiplayer Texas Hold ‘Em game,” Hellmuth said. “The future of poker is right here. Being able to play poker on your cell phone against other players across various carrier networks has tremendous potential for success.”

A variety of wireless content companies have launched similar multiplayer offerings this year. Indeed, Mforma said it plans to offer a multiplayer poker application later this year through Sprint.
