LONDON-A new study forecasts the market for wireless video will generate worldwide revenues of $5.4 billion by 2008, but industry players will have to solidify business models, technology standards and price offerings to take advantage of the market.
“As the latest in a line of applications touted to turn around flagging ARPUs (average revenue per user) and kick-start the dawn of a new mobile multimedia era, mobile video has been much in the spotlight recently,” wrote research firm ARC Group in its report on wireless video. “Whereas the adoption and usage levels of 3’s much-publicized video telephony services have not exactly set the industry alight in the early days of its launch, the underlying trends nevertheless point to a steady ramping up of interest in mobile video.”
The firm forecasts that until 2005 there will be a relatively slow rate of adoption, but beyond next year, strong growth is anticipated. The firm said that by 2008, there will be 250 million wireless video viewers.
