Wireless companies supply Red Cross for memorial dedication

WASHINGTON-Citrix Systems Inc., Sierra Wireless, Verizon Wireless, and Zumasys Inc. teamed with the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area to provide mobile access capabilities in support of mass care and disaster services during last weekend’s National World War II Memorial dedication in Washington, D.C.

The companies provided solutions as part of a larger mobility trial being deployed by Zumasys for the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., and San Diego. For the trials, Zumasys is providing PC5220 3G Wireless WAN PC Cards, manufactured by Sierra Wireless, to the Red Cross for use with its existing Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server to provide secure access from its laptops to applications via Verizon’s BroadbandAccess service. The solution allowed Red Cross staff secure wireless access to e-mail and Red Cross databases.

“This was an event of national significance, so it was critical that our staff had fast, wireless access to information from a number of different sites,” explained Jim Kiker, director of information technology for the Red Cross’ national capital area chapter.
