OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-GM’s OnStar is in a position to introduce its telematics services for commercial fleets, according to a new study from ABI Research.
“The technology is now at a level and a price point where GM can reach out to this huge market,” explained Frank Viquez, ABI’s director of automotive research. “They could include OnStar in OEM vehicles of this class and layer specialized services to address unique market segments.”
Although GM has not made any announcements to roll out fleet services, the company does offer a Nextel Communications Inc. handset-based option geared toward the commercial vehicle market, which ABI views as a trial of such services. “The next step will be to launch an integrated, embedded solution like the one on the comer side,” said Viquez.
