OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-Voice-over-Wi-Fi holds potential for both wireless local area network switch vendors and chip makers, according to new research from ABI Research.
WLAN switch vendors have promoted their solutions as a way to manage WLANs, including security, spectrum, access points and end users, according to ABI. With VoWi-Fi platforms, switch vendor technologies can allow users to connect to access points experiencing the lowest traffic flow, thus directly impacting quality of service.
“In one sense it’s an opportunity for such switch vendors to differentiate themselves, but so many of them are now taking up this opportunity that the question really becomes, ‘who does it better?’ ” explained Phil Solis of ABI.
VoWi-Fi also offers opportunities to chip makers like Texas Instruments, Philips and Agere that are working to develop smaller, low-power-consuming chips for consumer handsets, added ABI.
