Cingular extends GSM network to La.

NEW ORLEANS-Cingular Wireless L.L.C. said its GSM network is available throughout Louisiana as part of the carrier’s plan to invest $85 million in its Louisiana network this year. In addition to GSM voice services, Cingular noted its EDGE wireless data service is also now available in Louisiana, which can be accessed using either the Sony Ericsson GC82 EDGE PC Card or Nokia Corp.’s 6200 handset.

Cingular recently acquired US Unwired Inc.’s cellular operations in Louisiana and plans to upgrade the network in-line with its nationwide GSM-based network plans.

Cingular also reported that it has activated three new cell sites in Sprint Hill/Thompson Station, Tenn., in an attempt to improve call quality and coverage.
