Motorola Inc. in a conversation with RCR Wireless News quelled rumors that Cingular Wireless L.L.C. was recalling the Motorola V600 camera phone.
“The phone is absolutely not being recalled,” said Tracy Koziol, director and general manager of mid-tier GSM products at Motorola.
Cingular is still selling its current stock of the phone, but will not purchase any more of the devices for sale. Instead, Cingular has opted for an upcoming “similar” product scheduled for release in time for the Christmas holidays. Motorola declined to offer further details on the device.
In addition, the phone was subject to a “minor RF issue,” that affected Cingular users, said Koziol. That problem was proactively fixed before consumer complaints were issued. Motorola has a plan in place to address any future complaints and will upgrade any phone as needed, said Koziol.
Cingular did not return requests for comment by RCR Wireless News press time.
The V600 continues to be available through AT&T Wireless Services Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc., which were not affected by the RF glitch.
The V600 was released in the spring, following months of delays. The GSM phone features quad-band capabilities, Bluetooth wireless technology, an integrated camera with video capability, an MP3 player and polyphonic ring tones. It is listed for sale on Motorola’s Web site for $369.
Cingular is still offering customers the comparable, though slightly less advanced, $289 V400 handset.
