Cingular Wireless has partnered with content providers Vindigo, Tele Atlas, Digital Cyclone and Handango to offer a suite of mobile travel-related applications.
The service is indicative of a trend among wireless carriers of packaging similar content and then targeting the packages at specific market segments.
The new travel offerings include Mobile MapQuest, which provides maps and step-by-step directions; My-Cast, an application offering updated weather information; and a service informing drivers of traffic speeds and estimated travel times. The fourth application allows travelers to manage expenses, mileage costs and other finances.
“The availability of these applications marks another step in Cingular’s leadership in mobile content by giving Cingular customers the latest wireless capabilities to stay even more connected, informed and mobile,” said Jim Ryan, a Cingular vice president.
The applications are available to Cingular customers by a monthly fee or a one-time download fee, depending on the service.
