MONTREAL-Fido jumped into the mobile music-recognition game Tuesday with “Name That Tune,” an application that can identify nearly 2 million songs though handsets.
Through the service, the Canadian carrier’s subscribers can call “#DJ” and hold their phones up to pre-recorded music sources for 30 seconds. The application returns a text message with the song title and artist’s name.
Other wireless carriers, including Cingular Wireless L.L.C. through its AT&T Wireless Services Inc. acquisition, offer similar services. Fido customers may use the service once without being charged; further use costs $1 per successful identification.
“This service has been extremely popular throughout Europe,” said Rene Bousquet, vice president of marketing for Fido parent Microcell Solutions Inc., “and we expect to see the same excitement here.”
