Nokia trials NFC technology for wireless ticketing

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands-Nokia Corp., Royal Philips Electronics and Rhein-Main Verkehrsverbund have come together to trial a Near Field Communication solution to allow users to wirelessly buy, store and use tickets.

Using the Nokia 3220 mobile phones, users can access an existing contactless smart card ticketing infrastructure, said the companies. NFC also works on consumer electronic devices, PCs and smart objects.

“Users will simply need to touch their phones against the contactless reader as they get on and off the bus to register their journey,” said the three partners.

The solution will be based on the outside cover of Nokia mobile phones known as the NFC shell, while RMV will provide the electronic ticketing application. RPE developed the solution with Sony.

“As an integrated device, the mobile phone can also be used as a resource for transport information such as timetables as well as being a terminal for ticketing,” said the companies.
