Siemens targets Asia, introduces HSDPA base station

HONG KONG-Siemens AG said it is ramping up its third-generation efforts in the network market in Asia even as it jointly presented a new base station line with NEC Corp.

The base station, known as NB-88x, is equipped with High Speed Downlink Packet Access, which will provide download speeds averaging 2 to 3 megabits per second.

“We’re striving for a leading market position in this sector in Asia,” said Lothar Pauly, chief executive officer of Siemens communications group.

The company also referred to its recent W-CDMA contract with Malaysian operator Maxis. The company said Asia will be the world’s largest market, accounting for around 40 percent of operator investments in 3G technology.

“By next year, Asia will already be overtaking Europe in terms of demand for mobile enterprise solutions and driving the market for them,” said Pauly.
