Israeli government restricts mobile porn

JERUSALEM—In the wake of complaints that too many children were being exposed to erotic material, Israel’s Communications Ministry said last week it had moved to get wireless carriers to restrict access to mobile porn.

In an official statement, the ministry said it amended licenses for its four operators that would restrict adult-oriented multimedia messaging service (MMS) content including video clips and movies, as well as adult chat services. Adults who wish to view the content could access it only by entering a code and being identified as an adult.

Operators and governments worldwide are working to address issues regarding the growing availability of adult mobile content. “Opt in” programs such as the new Israeli system have been instituted in several markets to varying degrees of success.

In August, the ministry fined several operators for violating their permits regarding adult content.
