LAS VEGAS-Filling in for Motorola Chief Executive Officer Ed Zander, who missed the conference due to a death in the family, Ron Garriques, president of the company’s personal devices business, said, “Tech is back, and it’s personal,” in his remarks at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
“Nobody is asking the `commodity’ question about handsets anymore,” he said, explaining that this is because of convergence. He added that in the next few years he expects to see a worldwide market of 1 billion new devices each year, each tailored to an individual, each personal and unique.
Garriques also provided a sneak peak at the long-anticipated device the handset maker is set to release with Apple later this year.
The audience was flashed a photo of the new iTunes client on a Motorola device on the big screen for a few moments.
“We’ve got wickedly cool, compelling devices coming out this year that support the iTunes client,” Garriques said.
“One of the reasons we partnered with Apple is because they get music,” he said. Garriques explained that the applications that make sense are mobility extensions of what people already do anyway.
