Content providers continue Chinese chase

Content providers and developers continued to chase the exploding Chinese wireless market with two announcements Wednesday.

California-based mobile game publishers Jamdat Mobile Inc. and THQ Wireless Inc. said they were both investing in C-Valley, a Chinese content delivery company that has established relationships with Chinese wireless carriers China Mobile and China Unicom. Both Jamdat and THQ said they will leverage those relationships to distribute content to mobile users in China.

In an unrelated announcement, Shanghai-based content provider Linktone Ltd. said it will acquire Beijing Cosmos Digital Technology Co. Ltd., which develops and distributes WAP services to China Unicom. Linktone said it hopes to strengthen its overall WAP portfolio, enhance its relationship with the carrier and increase its share of China’s 2.5G wireless data market.

“The acquisition of Cosmos Digital is an exciting strategic step for Linktone that supports our continued expansion into next-generation wireless services and reflects the importance of mergers and acquisitions as an integral part of our overall growth strategy,” said Raymond Yang, Linktone’s chief executive officer. “In targeting acquisition candidates, our goal is to add proprietary technology and applications that will leverage Linktone’s nationwide mobile distribution platform.”
