Nokia files suit against InterDigital over 3G technology

Nokia Corp. filed a lawsuit against wireless patent company InterDigital Communications Corp., asking a Delaware district court to rule on whether Nokia’s ongoing legal battle with InterDigital should include third-generation technology.

InterDigital disclosed the lawsuit in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company’s stock dropped slightly after the news to about $17.48 per share.

InterDigital is no stranger to legal battles over mobile-phone technology. The company settled disagreements with L.M. Ericsson and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications L.P. and is still embroiled in legal battles with Nokia and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. InterDigital’s fight with Nokia is primarily over second-generation wireless technology.

InterDigital recently announced it received a licensing payment of $28 million from Sony Ericsson for its TDMA, GSM and GPRS technology.
