VIENNA, Austria-Mobilkom Austria said Thursday it will incorporate EDGE technology to expand its UMTS network coverage.
The carrier said it currently has UMTS coverage across 60 percent of Austria’s population, and the EDGE addition will allow for 95-percent population coverage. The new network is scheduled to be available by mid-2005.
“By using EDGE carrier technology as an intelligent complement to UMTS, we will be able to offer optimal utilization of mobile high-speed multimedia services throughout Austria-that is, on a full-coverage basis-by the summer of 2005,” said Dr. Boris Nemsic, chief executive officer of Mobilkom Austria.
Upgrading existing base stations began in four federal provinces in December. “The intelligent combination of UMTS and EDGE basic technology makes new transmission facilities in rural areas unnecessary,” added Nemsic.
The carrier is currently offering the Nokia 6630 for the new service, and additional handsets will be added later.<
