DoCoMo’s profit rises on AWS stake sale

TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. reported an 11-percent decrease in operating income in its quarterly results released Friday, although its net profit more than doubled thanks to the sale of its stake in AT&T Wireless Services Inc.

Japan’s leading wireless carrier also said its third-generation subscriber base topped 9 million subscribers Jan. 20, and its churn rate fell below 1 percent in the quarter ended Dec. 31.

The company posted a net profit of about $4 billion for the quarter compared with $1.3 billion in the same period a year ago.

DoCoMo said tariff decreases due to increased competition in Japan helped to decrease its cellular service revenues 4.5 percent to $30.1 billion for the quarter compared with the $31.5 billion the carrier reported in the same period a year ago. The carrier’s average revenue per user also decreased

The carrier said it had nearly 48 million total customers at the end of the year, up from 46.3 million customers at the end of 2003.
