WARREN, N.J.-Virgin Mobile USA L.L.C. said it has surpassed the 3-million subscriber mark two-and-a-half years after launching its youth-oriented prepaid mobile virtual network operator service using Sprint PCS’ wireless network. The MVNO was originally launched in July 2002 as a joint venture between United Kingdom-based Virgin Group plc and Sprint PCS.
In addition to its strong customer growth, Virgin Mobile USA noted that more than 70 percent of its customers sent or received text messages last year; more than 60 percent used a non-voice data service; and more than half of its customers downloaded ringtones in 2004, which the carrier said represented approximately 8 percent of the total U.S. ringtone market.
“Our continued growth confirms that we’re making a powerful connection with the youth market,” said Dan Schulman, chief executive officer of Virgin Mobile USA.
