CANNES, France-Sun Microsystems Inc. announced a series of new deals in conjunction with the 3GSM show, news that highlights the company’s focus on the carrier market while its technology for handset makers continues to gain traction.

“Java is now making money for everyone in the value chain,” said David Rivas, chief technology officer for Sun’s client systems group.

Among the company’s announcements:

c Telefónica Deutschland will use Sun’s Java Enterprise System middleware software stack to deploy its next-generation of applications and services.

c Sun will team with network interface providers including Ulticom, Adax and NMS Communications to improve its NetraTM ATCA (Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture) blade platform strategy.

c Sun unveiled a new 1.6GHz performance enhancement to its Netra 440, an UltraSPARC/Solaris based 4-way carrier grade server.

c The company will be demonstrating its new Lemon Peel technology, which Sun said will eliminate the need for a WAP browser session for wireless users searching for Java applications. The technology will allow users to shop for and download new Java applications using a Java application.
