Rural operators sign with Ericsson for hosted MMS

CANNES, France-L. M. Ericsson said it has signed a series of contracts with operators in the United States to deploy its hosted multimedia service.

The service providers include Carolina West Wireless, Centennial Wireless, Golden State Cellular, Rural Cellular Corp., Western Wireless Corp. and WestLink.

“These operators are able to offer multimedia subscriptions via MMS from Ericsson’s extensive and growing content provider network without having to negotiate individual licensing deals or invest in developer resources to format content for different phones and services,” said Ericsson.

The company also noted that content providers can gain instant access to a number of consumer markets through a single agreement. It named AccuWeather.com and Gizmoz as some of the content partners available in the service.

Ericsson also said it has launched a managed capacity solution to reduce operators’ total cost of ownership.

“It benefits both operators in high-growth markets that need efficient buildout of network coverage and capacity, as well as operators in developed markets facing technology migrations or consolidation,” said Hans Vestberg, executive vice president, business unit global services.
