STOCKHOLM-Fifteen companies have come together to launch an initiative to foster European leadership in the mobile business and keep pace with Asian rivals.
The initiative, known as the eMobility Technology Platform, is designed to enhance cooperation among such players as research community, public authorities and especially the European Community.
“The overall objective of the Platform is to drive future technology development in mobile and wireless communications in the way that best serves Europe’s citizens and the European economy,” said the companies.
The companies involved include Alcatel Alsthom, Deutsche Telekom, L.M. Ericsson, France Telecom, H3G, Lucent Technologies Inc., Motorola Inc., Nokia Corp., Philips, Siemens Ag, STMicroelectronics, Thales, TIM, Telefonica Moviles Espana and Vodafone. These equipment vendors, component makers and operators also work with European academics.
The platform supports the Lisbon Initiative, which encourages a European economic drive.
“In order to maintain the position of Europe in the global market for mobile and wireless systems in the 2010 to 2020 timeframe, it will be necessary to develop large-scale European approaches to system research and development as well as to wireless services and applications in the context of digital convergence,” said Magnus Madfors, chairman of the eMobility Steering Board.
