Leap expected in operating-system market

NATICK, Mass.-The global market for commercial mobile software, including operating systems, application frameworks, Java service and provisioning solutions, is expected to reach $1.6 billion by 2008 from $560 million last year, according to a new study released by Venture Development Corp.

The report, “The Mobile Software Stack for Voice, Data and Converged Handheld Devices: A Global Market Assessment,” also estimates the client/server-based enterprise mobile software market will grow from $582 million last year to $1.45 billion by 2008. That market includes security, device management and middleware, said VDC.

VDC’s study focuses on operating systems, application frameworks and mobile middleware/utilities. The firm defines mobile devices as small form-factor handsets, including voice-centric phones, feature phones and smart phones, personal digital assistants, and ruggedized or application-specific mobile computers.

The report also said no single operating system will dominate the mobile market. Linux, however, is expected to account for a growing share of the mobile market, said VDC.

In addition, the report said lowering the bill for materials is the biggest factor currently driving mobile-design decisions.
