Microsoft unveils Windows Mobile OS

LAS VEGAS-Microsoft Corp. unveiled its new Windows Mobile 2005 operating system at its developers’ conference Tuesday and touted a source code toolkit designed to expedite the process of bringing Bluetooth applications to market.

The new operating system features improved support for 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and includes updated versions of the company’s PowerPoint, Excel and Word products. New multimedia capabilities are also included as part of the Windows Media Player 10 Mobile offering.

The software giant said it is working with partners to develop “Windows Embedded Source Tools for Bluetooth Technology,” a managed code library consolidating all Bluetooth code and APIs from Windows Mobile and Windows CE. The toolkit streamlines the development process, the company said, as well as enabling device makers and software developers to create a customized Bluetooth solution for Windows CE or Windows Mobile.

“The traditionally time-intensive process for Bluetooth development just shrank considerably,” said Jane Gilson, director of the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft. “These source tools provide a unique solution, letting developers create Bluetooth applications in minutes instead of hours, all while expanding their Bluetooth offerings in this growing market.”
