HERNDON, Va.-Defywire Inc., which targets the mobile enterprise space, said it received a patent that allows smart phones and personal digital assistants to transfer simultaneously multiple types of data. The company said the patent also enables wireless devices to act as servers, which opens the door to peer-to-peer networking.
Defywire officials explained that when using many of the mobile data devices that combine voice functions with e-mail or some other data applications, it is impossible to make or receive a voice call while downloading or uploading the data. If a user receives a phone call while checking e-mail, the call goes to voice mail. Defywire’s Patent 6,891,860 is defined as the “method and apparatus for establishing multiple bandwidth-limited connections for a communications device.” In other words, Defywire’s technology enables the single communications channel used to support the transfer of information via a wireless carrier to the device to be split into several different uplink and downlink channels, each of which can be used to support simultaneously a different application.
“For the last several years, our company has been quietly selling a solution that revolutionizes the way companies use their wireless devices, and our receipt of this patent validates our belief that Defywire’s approach to moving data in the wireless market is truly unique,” said Jim Sondel, director of technology for Defywire.
The patent technology is a key part of the Defywire Mobility Suite, which provides mobile employees with secure, real-time access to corporate information systems. The platform communicates with software that can be installed on wireless devices.
Defywire has other wireless patents pending.
