TAMPA, Fla.-Nearly a dozen major players from the wireless and technology industries unveiled a joint venture that will offer a registry service for the “.mobi” Internet domain.
The suffix was approved early this month by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Luxembourg, and will be used to identify Web sites created specifically for mobile-phone users. The joint-venture company, mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd., was formed by Microsoft Corp., the GSM Association and Nokia Corp., as well as L.M. Ericsson, Samsung Corp., Syniverse Technologies, Telecom Italia SpA, T-Mobile International AG, Telefonica Moviles SA, Vodafone Group plc and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.’s 3 companies.
Wireless companies lobbied for the new suffix to encourage Web site designers to create Internet sites for mobile users.
