Businesses adopting wireless data more quickly than first expected

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-North American and European businesses are adopting mobile applications more quickly than originally planned or expected, according to a report from Forrester Research.

The survey indicated nearly half of the 1,000 network and telecom decision-makers polled had deployed wireless applications such as e-mail, calendars and employee content, marking an 18-percent increase over original deployment projections for 2005. Communications spending will increase at a slightly slower rate than overall information technology spending, Forrester predicted, with security technologies seeing the biggest spending increases. Internet Protocol telephony and Voice over IP also show strong promise for 2005 overall, the firm said. One-third of respondents said they are considering or are testing site-to-site VoIP, and 48 percent anticipate eventual full migrations to VoIP.
