BRENTWOOD, Tenn.-Cingular Wireless L.L.C. and Verizon Wireless each announced investments in network upgrades in several states. Cingular specifically said it plans to spend an estimated $6.2 billion this year upgrading its network nationwide.
Cingular said it is spending $160 million to increase coverage and capacity on its network in Tennessee that will include 67 new cell sites, new portable generators and backup batteries. Cingular also plans network enhancements, including in-building coverage in the State of Tennessee Capitol building and parking structures, additional coverage in several counties and improved coverage along major highways.
Cingular also announced plans to spend $67 million to expand and enhance its network in Kentucky, including 40 new cell sites; $165 million on its North Carolina and South Carolina networks that will include the addition of 350 cell sites; a $500 million investment in its New York and New Jersey networks that will include about 275 new cell sites; $245 million in upgrades to its south Texas network that will include 150 new cell sites; and $22 million in upgrades to its Hawaii network that will include 22 new cell sites.
Not to be left behind, Verizon Wireless said it has expanded its statewide network in Georgia to include additional cell sites and enhanced coverage capacity in 15 markets throughout the state. Verizon said it has spent more than $100 million this year on its network in Georgia.
