W-CDMA subscribers reach 30M, says GSA

LONDON-The Global mobile Suppliers Association said in its latest third-generation survey estimates there are more than 30 million W-CDMA subscribers. According to the survey, there are 82 W-CDMA networks in 37 countries delivering commercial services, an increase of 22 networks during 2005. Additionally, seven networks are at pre-commercial stages.

The GSA’s survey also confirmed that recent terminal launches have pushed the number of W-CDMA/High-Speed Downlink Packet Access terminal devices announced in the market up to 186 models from 26 suppliers, with 70 models launched during the past six months.

According to the latest data from Informa Telecoms & Media, the number of subscribers to W-CDMA services reached 30.79 million globally by end-July, representing growth of 13.9 million since end-2004 and averaging almost 2 million new subscriber additions per month during 2005.

The GSA survey also identified 46 operators currently operating or deploying combined W-CDMA and EDGE networks.
