U.S. Cellular courts Hispanic market with new content

CHICAGO-U.S. Cellular Corp. became the latest carrier to court the Hispanic market, announcing a deal with the wireless arm of media company Univision to provide Latin content and Spanish language wireless services to its subscribers.

The Tier 2 operator added a new category, “En Espanol,” to easyedge, its suite of data applications. Five new applications are offered through the partnership with Univision Movil, including ringtones, news, games and wallpapers.

U.S. carriers are increasingly eyeing the Hispanic market as they ramp up wireless data offerings. Hispanics spend 25 percent more per month on cell-phone service than other users, according to U.S. Cellular, and 29 percent of the demographic uses wireless downloads.

“This partnership underscores our commitment to providing the best customer experience to our Hispanic customers,” said Carlos M. Garcia, U.S. Cellular’s Hispanic segment marketing manager.
