SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. continued to gain traction on the other side of the Atlantic, announcing plans to bring BREW services to wireless users in Russia.
The chipmaker and software developer said it will partner with Sky Link, Russia’s largest CDMA operator, for a commercial launch of applications and services based on the BREW platform. Sky Link will use the technology to offer downloadable ringtones, games and information application services.
Qualcomm began targeting European operators earlier this year by providing a consistent user interface across a carrier’s devices, and the work is beginning to pay off. Several days ago, the company inked its second deal with a European operator, announcing an agreement with Nordisk Mobiltelefon AS, a CDMA2000 1x EV-DO 450 MHz carrier focusing on rural Nordic markets. U.K. operator O2 became the first European provider to use BREW in a deal announced in June.
“Sky Link’s decision to offer BREW products and services will provide wireless subscribers in Russia an exciting new experience on their mobile phones,” Qualcomm executive Bob Briggs said of the most recent agreement. “We look forward to working with them as they move toward a commercial launch of wireless data services.”
