SINGAPORE-The GSM Association announced its successful completion of six months of network interoperability trials in Europe and Asia with Session Initiation Protocol and Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem technology.
Many operators and vendors participated in the trials as basic IMS and SIP compatibility are key success factors for their multimedia services, such as instant messaging, Push to talk over Cellular, video sharing, multi-player games and eventually voice applications.
“Creating new services with IMS has great potential, it means richer communication for both mobile and fixed subscribers, as well as new opportunities for software developers and service providers,” said Christian Fredrikson, vice president of Nokia Networks. “We believe that GSMA SIP trials have helped operators, carriers and vendors to accumulate the needed experience for large-scale commercial launches of new rich communication services.”
“IMS will be the key to a new way of mobile communications, offering exciting applications we have never seen before,” said Edwin Van Ierland, senior vice president of KPN Carrier Services International. “Seamless interoperability is crucial to make that happen. With IMS, the future will never be the same.
Following the successful testing in Asia and Europe, the GSMA said IMS trials will continue and more commercially focused trials will take place with services like video streaming, PoC and instant messaging.
