Namco forms mobile-gaming unit

SAN JOSE, Calif.-Video-game company Namco America Inc. announced it will form a separate business unit to focus on the growing market for mobile-phone games. Kenji Hisatsune, Namco’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, will oversee Namco Networks when it begins operations Jan. 1.

“The mobile games industry is thriving, and the establishment of Namco Networks shows our dedication to the mobile and network industry,” Hisatsune said. “Through quality titles, strong partnerships and revenue growth, we have created a reputation of excellence, a reputation which is maintained by our team of dedicated professionals.”

Namco owns such recognizable game properties as Pac-Man, Galaga and Dig Dug.

Namco is not the only video-game company to target wireless. THQ Inc. and Electronic Arts Inc. also have divisions focused on the space.
