Cingular selects Andrew’s 3G network testing system

ORLAND PARK, Ill.-Andrew Corp. announced a contract to supply Cingular Wireless L.L.C. with its third-generation network testing equipment for a nationwide quality benchmarking program.

Cingular recently announced that it would invest nearly $6 billion in its network during the next year to improve network coverage and quality. The company said its technicians, along with other third parties, will drive nearly 30 million miles testing its network.

Andrew said it will install the Invex 3G wireless network drive test system in specially equipped Cingular vehicles for collecting network data in wireless markets across the United States. The data then will be used by Cingular to identify and remedy network quality and coverage issues.

Andrew said its Invex3G solution enables wireless network operators to view their services from the subscribers’ perspective and provides critical quality-of-service measurements, including mean opinion scores, data throughput and call details. In addition, the company said its Invex3G supports all major mobile technologies and can scan simultaneously multiple radio frequency carriers for multi-technology testing.

“Andrew’s Invex3G system will enable technicians to gather the data required to fine tune our network,” said Mike Pietropola, vice president of network operations at Cingular. “The network is the foundation of our business. We need the best tools available for testing network quality and coverage in order to give our customers the best wireless experience in the country.”

Andrew designs and manufactures infrastructure equipment and solutions, supplying both operators and original equipment manufacturers. Terms of the agreement with Cingular were not disclosed.
