NEC, Ericsson flex HSDPA might

TOKYO-NEC Corp. said its High Speed Downlink Packet Access technology is ready for commercial use worldwide after the company tested the technology on Vodafone K.K.’s network in Japan over the summer.

NEC said its HSDPA technology will be in commercial networks launched this fall.

Meanwhile, L.M. Ericsson announced it completed upgrades to Vodafone K.K.’s commercial network in parts of central Tokyo to support HSDPA testing. The companies have been doing pre-commercial test trials in a lab, and can now test on a live network.

Ericsson and Vodafone K.K. have been jointly performing lab trials of pre-commercial HSDPA equipment since September of 2004 and have been testing in the field since early 2005.
