LG to make SavaJe phone

SEOUL-LG Electronics Co. Ltd. said it will sell a mobile phone running SavaJe Technologies’ Java-based operating system. The move is notable since SavaJe counts Vodafone Group plc, T-Mobile International and Orange S.A. as financial backers.

SavaJe launched several years ago with a Java-based operating system that the company said operators could customize to their liking. The company argued that the wireless industry’s embrace of Java technology inside mobile phones would help push its wares. However, the company has made little headway-until now.

“LG Electronics and SavaJe Technologies have worked closely together since announcement of the relationship between the two companies a year ago,” said Skott Ahn, executive vice president of LG. “Creating an open OS is a significant achievement in itself. To do so using Java, offering this level of performance for the entire applications platform, including full telephony support, brings a new era of opportunity for developers, operators and end-users.”

LG said its SavaJe phone features a slide design along with a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and an SD Card memory card slot. The phone will be available next year.
