Lucent to build BellSouth’s IMS future

ATLANTA & MURRAY HILL, N.J.-Lucent Technologies Inc. said it reached a multi-year agreement to lay the foundation for BellSouth Corp.’s Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem architecture.

Lucent said its next generation solution will enable BellSouth to offer a range of advanced consumer IP services, including Voice over Internet Protocol.

“BellSouth’s new consumer VoIP capability is a critical component leading to a comprehensive experience that integrates voice, data and video in a way that best meets the needs of the individual customer, helping open the door to a whole new level of personalized services,” said Bill Smith, chief technology officer for BellSouth.

As the network integrator, Lucent said it will provide end-to-end multi-vendor network integration services, including network and security design, installation and engineering, along with program management.

“BellSouth can now evolve to an IMS architecture by simply adding session management and unified subscriber database functions to help enable personalized services that customers can access anytime, anywhere, with any device,” said Mike Baumgartner, vice president of sales for Lucent.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Last month, Lucent inked a four-year deal with Cingular Wireless L.L.C. to supply the carrier with IMS architecture. BellSouth controls 40 percent of Cingular.
