TORONTO-Two vendors made HSDPA trial announcements this week.
Nortel Networks Corp. and operator Edge Wireless L.L.C. plan to begin field trials of UMTS and HSDPA technology, including demonstrations of video streaming, gaming, Web browsing and FTP downloads at speeds up to 1.5 megabits per second. Edge also selected Nortel to expand its GSM/GPRS/EDGE wireless voice and data network.
The carrier offers service in Oregon, Wyoming, Idaho and California, and has an extensive roaming agreement with Cingular Wireless L.L.C.
In Europe, Nokia Corp. and T-Mobile International said they completed HSDPA calls on T-Mobile’s network in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany. The Nokia HSDPA solution is a software upgrade to W-CDMA networks.
