JAPAN
Access Co. Ltd. said it completed its acquisition of PalmSource Inc., which provides the Palm OS operating system for mobile devices. PalmSource now is a wholly owned subsidiary of Access. Each outstanding share of PalmSource common stock has been converted into the right to receive $18.50 in cash, said the companies. Access primarily sells Web browser software to mobile-phone makers.
SPAIN
Telefonica Moviles signed two global content agreements, with content vendors I-play and THQ, which the carrier said will allow its subsidiaries to improve their mobile gaming offerings. Telefonica operates in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, Mexico, Spain, Nicaragua, Uruguay and Venezuela.
MEXICO
Latin American wireless provider America Movil S.A. de C.V. signed an international roaming agreement with Vodafone Group plc covering 53 countries. The deal initially includes voice and GPRS roaming services, and preferred roaming and virtual home environment. A second stage of the agreement is expected to include prepaid roaming and top-up services. In addition to its extensive Latin American holdings, America Movil owns Tracfone Wireless Inc., which is one of the largest U.S. prepaid wireless service providers. Vodafone controls 45 percent of U.S.-based operator Verizon Wireless.
CAYMAN ISLANDS
Caribbean wireless provider Digicel Group said it completed the acquisition of Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s operations in the Cayman Islands. Digicel noted that plans were under way to provide former Cingular customers with full access to Digicel’s product and service offerings as well as integrating Cingular’s network with Digicel’s operations. Digicel is still waiting approval for its acquisition of Cingular’s properties in Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
