NEW DELHI, India-Motorola Inc. expanded its operations in India, and plans to begin assembling phones in the country. Previously, Motorola shipped phones into India.
“India is all about opportunity-and today’s announcements make it clear that Motorola is here to be a major player,” said Allen Burnes, corporate vice president for the High Growth Markets operation within Motorola’s phone business. “Across technologies and price tiers, Motorola is expanding its presence in India. From our higher-end `must haves’such as the new Motorola L6 candy bar and our best-selling Razr clamshell, to our hugely popular C115, Motorola is helping connect the unconnected.”
Motorola’s move follows a similar recent announcement from rival Nokia Corp. Indeed, handset makers are converging on emerging markets like India as a way to boost sales. Nokia and Motorola specifically have begun competing more directly on sales of low-end devices in emerging markets.
