Venezuela’s Movistar launches EV-DO

CARACAS, Venezuela-Mobile network operator Movistar launched a high-speed CDMA2000 1x EV-DO network that the carrier said covers 26 major Venezuelan cities.

Movistar said the network supports broadband services such as movie trailers, digital images, songs and video games. Corporate users can also access virtual office applications and use Virtual Private Networks, according to Movistar. The operator said the network has speeds of up to 2.4 megabits per second.

Lucent Technologies Inc. supplied upgrades to the network base stations and mobile switching center.

Movistar is a subsidiary of Telefonica Moviles and has more than 5.3 million customers in Venezuela.

“The technology is transforming the lifestyle, communications and entertainment for our customers, thanks to the innovative services that are being offered,” said Luis Malvido, president of Telefonica Moviles.
