BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS-Caribbean wireless carrier Digicel Group plc said it received approval from the Fair Trade Commission of Barbados for its acquisition of Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s operations in that country.

The acquisition of Cingular’s network will expand Digicel’s reach to five new territories: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bermuda, Dominica and St. Kitts & Nevis. Digicel also will acquire licenses in the French West Indies, including Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barths. The application for the merger of the operations was filed in October.

Digicel launched commercial services in Barbados in February 2004. The company has operations in 15 Caribbean nations and said its investment in the region since the company began offering service in 2001 is approaching $1 billion.
