InterDigital warns Nokia of timetable to end royalties dispute

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.-InterDigital Communications Corp. said it will establish a timetable for discussions and possible future arbitration to resolve its 3-year-old dispute over royalties with Nokia Corp.

ITC, an InterDigital subsidiary, said it hopes to enforce a July ruling from the International Chamber of Commerce’s Court of Arbitration. The court ruled that Nokia owes ITC $112 million in royalties for technology used in Nokia’s second-generation and third-generation handsets and infrastructure in 2002 and 2003.

ITC claims Nokia also owes up to $140 million in royalties since 2003. But Nokia has balked at payment, saying the award may not be enforceable and that any enforcement of the ruling would be premature.

“ITC seek(s) to resolve any and all unresolved issues that may impact a determination of the amount to be paid under the final award,” ITC said in a prepared statement. “No decision has been rendered in the enforcement proceeding and the court has not announced a timetable for rendering such decision.”
