Trimble buys public-safety software firm APS

SUNNYVALE, Calif.-Trimble Navigation Ltd. acquired Advanced Public Safety Inc. in an all-cash transaction, the companies announced.

APS is a privately held company based in Deerfield Beach, Fla., that develops mobile software for use in public-safety applications. The software allows real-time information to be delivered to police officers via in-vehicle computers and handheld devices. In addition, the company’s Virtual Partner software enables in-vehicle computers to respond to voice commands and provide audio replies, and its QuickTicket software automates ticket writing and accident reporting.

Trimble said the deal allows it to round out the public-safety products it offers through its subsidiaries, including rugged mobile computing devices offered by Tripod Data Systems and fleet management systems offered by Trimble Mobile Solutions.

The companies did not release financial details of the transaction.
