SAN FRANCISCO—Moderati released its list of 2005’s top ringtones, with notes on some regional flavor.
Hip-hop dominated the list in ’05, with 60 percent of the songs from these artists. Video-game themes such as “Super Mario Brothers” and movie themes like “Halloween” also placed in the top five.
Moderati compared the top download lists for the East and West coasts, using area code as a proxy for region. Number portability skewed the results some, however, Moderati noted some interesting trends. Dr. Dre’s 2000 release, “Still Dre,” stayed at the top of the West Coast charts, ending the year as the No. 4 most downloaded tone, compared with an East-Coast ranking of No. 19. Easterners favored the “Godfather” theme, placing it at No. 3, compared with a No. 14 ranking from Angelenos. Interestingly, the O.C. theme song “California” came in at No. 16 in New York, but did not make the top 20 in the Los Angeles area code.
