HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.-Symbol Technologies Inc. unveiled a rugged wireless gadget the company said will give businesses all the wireless capabilities they need. Symbol’s new MC70, which it has dubbed an “Enterprise Digital Assistant,” features support for EDGE networks, Wi-Fi hotspots and Bluetooth connections. Symbol is selling the device for between $2,195 and $2,845, depending on its configuration.
“Symbol’s MC70 EDA reflects our commitment to responding to the stringent needs of our enterprise customers for rugged, full-featured mobile computing solutions,” said Bob Chen, vice president and general manager of mobile computing for Symbol. “Symbol’s history and expertise in delivering rugged mobile computers to the world’s leading companies has uniquely positioned us to deliver similar capabilities in a smaller form factor to meet enterprise demands.”
Symbol primarily made its mark with rugged bar code scanners. However, the company has dabbled in products that support cellular networks.
The company’s new MC70 features Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and Intel Corp.’s XScale processor. It is designed to work on Cingular Wireless L.L.C.’s network in the United States.
